Welcome to my post about creating a red panda in pastel and coloured pencil. It is a follow on from my last post about creating lilies in pastel and acrylic. This panda was just so cute and fun to create plus I learned a lot during the process. Read and to find out more about that or pop back to that last link to find out about my process for the backgrounds.
Process Gallery for creating a red panda in pastel and coloured pencil
In the gallery above UC the first blocking stage and then a couple of layers of pastel and finally coloured pencil. There is also a picture with a red circle showing some damage that occurred when using the coloured pencil. This led me to thinking about having a better support for the pastel work. In my last few posts I have been working expressively and only using a few layers, easily supported by my matt acrylic base. But as I got more into using pastels again, I wanted to stretch for a little bit of detail. Especially with how cute this was. The pencils soon scratched up small chunks of pastel which, although fixed, were sitting on thinner areas of acrylic. See how I mitigate for this in the next post …

Adding fur textures with coloured pencil to a pastel base this is super fun and I intend to further explore this technique. What is your favourite mixed media combo with pastel or with coloured pencil?
