I think she is right; we need to focus on diversity at grass roots level and help more disadvantaged players get the chance to achieve success. Of course, the barriers to success are multifold but they shouldn’t be racial.

Let me try to explain my thinking .... Value and Cost are not Always Equal A great example is Amazon Prime shopping. Although I know the prices are inflated I find the reduced stress of not having to navigate busy shops to maybe find what I’m looking for is often worth it. Sometimes cost might be far too high for the value you might place on an item for example, for me designer shoes cost the earth but do not have as much value as arch supports. Another example is the cost of a good holiday. If it rejuvenates you and helps you cope better with your day to day then its value is probably higher than its cost to you. Travel insurance is another good case in point.

You may be a fan of one type and just stick to that or experiment with variations of these or make up your own. I would love to see them. Here’s a bit about why I chose the borders I did for each page - obviously this is just what appealed to me at the time as well as being examples of different type of borders.

Artists will often repeat a colour in different areas of a canvas to bring the background and subject together. Motifs are often repeated and if different sizes are used some sort of rhythm can be established as well as unifying. abstract painting St John’s Wort inspired I often use repetition in my art in all the layers. In the final layer it is obvious as I repeat a series of pixel shapes and dashes in different parts of the canvas, for example in the image to the right (click to get a full sized view).

- [Happy Process – What is Layering in Art?](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-process-what-is-layering-in-art/): In art layering means letting one application of paint dry before adding another. In some painting the layers are translucent, typically with watercolours but oils and acrylics can both be translucent, and so the layers beneath affect the colour of the outcome. In other painting opaque layers are used to obscure parts of the previous layers, for example when painting animal fur a dark layer may go down first followed by gradually lighter areas. In my painting I use translucent and opaque paints in my layering. In contrast some art is created in a single layer such as when working graphically. Think of colouring pages where areas of the painting are filled in, in one go.

Typically they emerge in June from their underground homes where they lived for 6 years as larvae munching on rotting wood. They are endangered in this country and it is thought to be because of a lack of available wood and the destruction of wood containing larvae.

The flowers make a lovely herbal tea to drink in the evening.
- [Celtic Hawthorn Mixed Media Spread](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/celtic-hawthorn-mixed-media-spread/): From the superstitions, the Celts would appear to have had a contradictory relationship with Hawthorn. On the one hand children were scolded for bringing it into the house for fear of causing a death while in other lore it was used to protect a house from witches. Witches were also believed to make their broomsticks from Hawthorn. Also it was thought to be unlucky to disturb Hawthorn bushes as these were sacred sites of the Faeries and the Faeries were not to be disturbed. Some of these contradictions may be explained by the existence of two different trees of the same name. One, which would of been scarce centuries ago and is more common now smells sweet and grows as a tree. The other, Woodland Hawthorn, smells of rotting flesh and would have been more common when these superstitions were popular.
- [Raven & Periwinkle Art Journal Spread.](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/raven-periwinkle-art-journal-spread/): I was reading about Celtic lore for February, the month of the snowdrop. The petals of the snowdrop symbolised death to the Celts so this week I had a look at lore surrounding death. The Celts believed it was unlucky to disturb the periwinkles that they grew on graves and also that it was unlucky to kill a raven. The raven itself is associated with The Morrigan, a terrifying Irish Celtic Goddess. She also goes by the name Badhbh which means crow or raven.

Also on at Qube gallery during my solo exhibition is an exhibition downstairs of landscapes painted in a loose style which is worth a visit.

For this art journal spread I was inspired by brown hares which were traditional Winter fare in the UK. There is some debate still over how native a species the brown hare is. Their boxing behaviour is explained now by the females rebuffing the males in Spring. However, it is unknown why groups of hares on airfields chase after planes regularly.

I feel the feedback I have had from my tutor has helped me see things I had missed and increased my self-confidence in that it has also frequently echoed my own thoughts about each piece. For example, I had felt the menu card exercise result was appropriate and my tutor's feedback that the watercolour and pencil technique worked well for the brief reinforced this. Also I had been dissatisfied with my editorial illustraton brief and my tutor's comment that it was confusing motivated me to readdress the concept I was trying to visualise.

That said, focusing on the sadness can be cathartic and is sometimes necessary to deal with grief. It all depends on how you process emotion and where you are emotionally. Personally, and especially because of the effects of depression, I find it most helpful to try to focus on positive things.

- [Mother’s Day Cards 2020](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/shop/mothers-day-cards-2020/): These bright, playful cards are sure to bring a smile to mom's face on Mother's Day. 10 cms x 10 cms and printed to the edges of the card on matt cardstock. The designs were created with acrylic paint and ink on kraft paper.

They are printed on 300gm pearlescent card; with a touch of gold for the mistletoe and holly and with a touch of silver for the reindeer; or matte white card. - [Wonderful Wildflower Cushions](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/shop/wildflower-cushions/): Wildflower cushions made out of fabric printed with my original wonderful wildflower designs by Prinfab. Each cushion cover has then been embroidered by hand or by sewing machine (by hand) and quilted before being sewn up. The backs of the cushion covers are formed by fabric so that the pillow sits snugly and securely without need for zips, poppers or buttons making for a much less lumpy cushion.
- [Wonderful Wildflower Art with metal leaf](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/shop/wonderful-wildflower-art-with-metal-leaf/): White 15cm x 15cm card have been edged with metal leaf matching the art piece. The art pieces have been printed out on canvas paper and mounted on the front of the cards. The insides are blank for your own message. They include an envelope. There are a limited number of these metal leafed cards available as many sold at Qube Gallery, Oswestry.

- [Playing with Paint](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/shop/playing-with-paint/): This is a short course made up of 4 sessions showing the construction of a page each week. The videos in the course are 852 x 480 px for maximum compatibility with handheld devices. They may not work on smaller than an iPad however. Please check that the promo video above works on the device that you intend to use to access the course.
- [Wildflower Stencils 1](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/shop/wildflower-stencils-1/): Wildflower stencils made at home out of mylar sheets. They are tough and durable although the more intricate designs will need careful use to avoid damage. To see the name of each design click on the first thumbnail and you will be able to click through designs with their names beneath.
