Who Needs It?](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/technical-excellence-in-your-art-journal/): Who needs technical excellence in your art journal?  Are you someone who considers themselves a perfectionist?  You may want to check out a different blog post …. Seriously, because it’s just not the place for it.  In your art journal/sketchbook/scrapbook try things out, make mistakes, have eureka moments then realise they were more oo yuka moments.  It’s all good.  Then for your real life projects focus on perfection all you want. - [Guided by the Wolf: Honouring Loss and Finding Strength in Celtic Mythology](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/mythology/celtic/healing-through-celtic-myths-after-loss/): This post about healing through Celtic myths after loss is inspired by that saddest of facts - death.  More specifically the passing of someone close.  During this bleak time it has been hard thinking positively, never mind creatively, and yet it is creativity that moves things forwards once more.  The finality that is death; the loss of all the memories yet to be created - gone forever.  It is impossible to overcome and so I must look inside it, but where to start? - [Creating a Kingfisher with Mixed Media: A Journey Beyond Technique](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/creating-a-kingfisher-using-mixed-techniques/): Today I am going to take a deeper look inside Creating a Kingfisher with Mixed Media by focusing on some of the other features involved in making art. Every piece starts with some sort of inspiration whether that is manually generated or bestowed upon us by the gods.  I often looked to nature for inspiration for art when I feel like just practising my painting and the kingfisher is such a striking subject with its colouring being a natural complementary colour scheme. - [Cuteeee Red Panda in Pastel and Coloured Pencil](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/creating-a-red-panda-in-pastel-and-coloured-pencil/): Welcome to my post about creating a red panda in pastel and coloured pencil. It is a follow on from my last post about creating lilies in pastel and acrylic.  This panda was just so cute and fun to create plus I learned a lot during the process. Read and to find out more about that or pop back to that last link to find out about my process for the backgrounds. - [Lily She’s Lovely](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/creating-vibrant-lilies-with-pastels/): Welcome to my post about creating vibrant lilies with pastels.  I am going to be taking a loose and spontaneous approach rather than a detailed, highly realistic portrayal of these beautiful plants.  Lilies are pretty easy to grow - as long as you can keep lily beetles at bay !  I love the scented ones but the bright and colourful ones are the most fun to paint.  These lilies have been faithfully blooming in my garden for about a decade so I thought it was high time I brought them to an art journal page.  I worked from photos rather than cutting the stems and am including some below for you to use in your own art journal page (I retain copyright but grant you a license to use them). - [An Awesome Stag in Pastel](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/creating-loose-pastel-stag-artwork-on-acrylic/): Hey folkies! Welcome to this post about creating loose pastel stag artwork on acrylic. It’s been a while hasn’t it? My last blog post was back in November 2023 when I talked about character design ideas. Since then, I have been working hard (spoons allowing) on rebranding and focusing my site. It is now 3 sites as you may have noticed. I think it works a lot better but would love to hear your thoughts? - [A Rose By Any Other Name](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/layering-techniques-for-rose-art-journal-pages/): In this post I will be looking at layering techniques for rose art journal pages with a focus on one strategy specifically.  Last week I got stuck into pastels after a long break. Art journaling was a phenomena back in 2015 and YouTube was full of inspirational videos of how to use this new supply or that.  Of course some people were making big bucks off the trend but that’s just the world we live in.  Nowadays there’s less hype around it but for me art journaling has expanded into a serious art practice.  I choose to share my (some of ) my pages but of course you don’t have to and creating art within a book is a very rewarding way to create art without any pressure. - [5 Adaptable Character Design Ideas from Everyday Life](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/story/character-design-ideas-from-everyday-life/): So, you’re looking for character ideas you can steal? What if you just need to look around you? How do you come up with character design ideas? This post looks at getting character design ideas from everyday life. I’m going to tell you a story then talk about how I get ideas then tell you another story. So are you sitting comfortably? - [The Creative Process Deconstructed](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/craft/jewellery/creative-process-deconstructed/): This post aims to deconstruct the/my creative process. The creative process can refer to any period/series of actions/thoughts that lead to the production of anything and in some cases nothing . . . there are no guarantees with it. I will begin by looking at my recent jewellery range. - [Giveaway to Celebrate 50 Whole Years on Earth](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/events-and-celebrations/giveaway-to-celebrate-50/): I turned 50 on June 15th 2023 and I wanted to celebrate with a giveaway. For a while it was an impossibility that I would reach such an age but since I have I want to spread the love. What better way to do this than with a giveaway and what better prize than a print of a painting of my best friend - my son’s dog Harley. - [Creative Mixed Media Jewellery Range with 4 Materials](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/craft/jewellery/creative-mixed-media-jewellery/): This new range of creative mixed media jewellery has been really fun to make. I have developed it because I was asked to run a jewellery course for Flintshire Wellbeing Brochure following another tutor having to withdraw. The aim of the course will be to provide an outlet for creativity while teaching some new techniques. I decided on mokume gane with polymer clay and an inlay technique. This means using cutters to produce the shapes and stamps to create the furrows for the inlay technique. - [Intimidated by Oil Paints? 5 Reasons Not to be Hesitant](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/intimidated-by-oil-paints/): Oil paints need no introduction; they have been used in many celebrated paintings by ‘the masters’. It may be this status as the medium of the masters that causes them to be regarded with such reverence that they feel just out of the grasp of the beginner painter. But they are just a medium and I want to show how you can overcome that initial barrier. Because oil paints are a lot of fun ;) - [Serendipity in Art – 5 Ways to Heighten Your Creative Experience](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/serendipity-in-art/): What do I mean by serendipity in art? I’m talking about the art making process rather than an art buying serendipitous experience or serendipity relating to selling art and world events. What even is serendipity? I take it to mean fortunate, accidental occurrences that cause the right thing to happen at just the right time. - [Year of the Rabbit with 4 Radiant Metal Leaf Colours](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/year-of-the-rabbit-with-metal-leaf/): 2023 is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit so I've made another art journal page following on from my 'Year of the Tiger' page last year. I love doing art journal pages of the Chinese zodiac as it is animal based and there is lots of colour and nature symbolism. - [Football Woman Inspiring Young Ladies Editorial Illustration](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/illustration/football-woman-editorial-illustration/): Nope! I am no football woman; I’ve never really ‘got it’. But the women’s football team has been truly inspiring. I think it is amazing that this previously male dominated sport has seen a women’s team achieve such resounding success. That their ‘best player’, Beth Mead, has come out as gay and has written a book must surely stand her in good stead as a role model for young girls and LGBT groups in this country. There was some controversy about her comment that you need to select the best players for a team and not concentrate on diversity at the highest level. I think she is right; we need to focus on diversity at grass roots level and help more disadvantaged players get the chance to achieve success. Of course, the barriers to success are multifold but they shouldn’t be racial. - [Innovative Handmade Resin Pins Process](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/process/innovative-handmade-resin-pins-process/): Introducing my handmade resin pins. . . Last year I developed my own process for making pins as I want to be able to turn my art into pins/brooches but the cost of having enamel pins made was too high. In this post I want to share some of my process and introduce my first range of pins: Pinimals - [Imperfect but Wonderful Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/wonderful-art-journal-page/): Welcome to another wonderful art journal page post :) I say this with a chuckle because the quote for the page is: You don’t have to be perfect to be wonderful Of course being wonderful is subjective so there may be various reasons why something is wonderful to you. In this case the page is wonderful to me because it is finished and a mistake was successfully corrected. I’ll explain more about that later . . . - [Easy Art Journal Page with Effective Stamp Masking Technique](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/easy-art-journal-page/): This easy art journal page is fun to make with Inktense pencils, gelatos and a cool stamp masking technique. This is another page I have created to give an example of a response to a quote on one of my courses. The quote that I chose was: Everything is hard before it is easy. and I chose it because I find it a good thing to remember on difficult days. It applies to learning a new skill or understanding a concept or even getting over a bereavement or even a breakup. Arguably some things never get easy but what I take from this quote is that there is the possibility of something being easy eventually. I hoped this would also give a sense of hope after working on this idea. - [3 Fun Watercolour Techniques to add to Brilliant Washes](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/3-fun-watercolour-techniques/): In this post I will share 3 fun watercolour techniques you can combine with washes of brilliant colour. The quote that inspired this page is: Every moment is a new beginning This quote doesn’t immediately conjure imagery so I had to think of what imagery could represent this idea. What came to mind was a game we used to play as children which involves picking dandelion seed heads and blowing on them whilst counting 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, etc. In this way the dandelion represents moments going by. Every moment can be a new beginning as they are all seeds which may grow into new plants. - [Add Some Art Journal Pop Up Fun](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/add-some-art-journal-pop-up-fun/): It’s time for some art journal pop up fun . . . Pop ups are a great way to add some fun to your art journal and I will show you in this post how to make a pop up ‘booklet’ from a page in your journal. When you start thinking of pages in a 3 dimensional way it hugely expands the possibilities for creativity. You’re no longer limited to getting your feelings across in a flat image but can now employ movement, surprise and height to show your thoughts about a topic. - [Exuberant Art Journaling with Mosaics](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-with-mosaics/): Art journaling with mosaics is always fun and means you get to play with your lovely patterned papers. So the quote for this art journal mosaic page is: Keep facing the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you ~ Walt Whitman I think this a lovely, positive encouragement and I wanted to illustrate it in a bold way. After sketching a few ideas I decided on one that showed the visual metaphor most clearly. I just knew that working graphically with mosaics was going to be great way of depicting the sunshine versus the shadows. - [Fun Wabi Sabi Inspired Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/wabi-sabi-inspired-art-journal-page/): The quote for this wabi sabi inspired art journal page is: "You are never too old to set another goal or dream another dream" ~ Malala Yusafzi Why Wabi Sabi? As I understand it, wabi sabi is an aesthetic perspective that sees beauty in imperfection and applies not only to physical objects but also to moments and experiences. - [Textured Art Journal Page – 3 Fun Ways to Add Texture You’ll Love.](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/textured-art-journal-page/): In this textured art journal page I will show you 3 ways to add texture. The quote for this page is: The bad news is time flies, the good news is you're the pilot. It reminds me that although time on Earth is limited you get to make decisions about how you spend it. Even if you are stuck in bed with illness or have a lot of things that you have to do every day you can still choose what to think about. All the great human inventions we have to be thankful for started out as an idea in someone’s thoughts so who’s to say that you can’t have an idea that changes the world? I loved the idea of celebrating this freedom in an art journal page and the techniques of adding texture that I have chosen hint at the depth of the unconscious mind and the process of revealing what is hidden there. - [Magnificent Mechanical Memories – Steampunk Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/steampunk-art-journal-page/): My, inspired by steampunk art journal page is a foray into the world of ‘makivity’ (a word my son came up with at an early age to describe his cardboard creations). For steampunk is not just an aesthetic style but a whole culture around unique mechanical self built objects. The steampunk universe stretches over art, illustration, statues, sculptures, film, music, stories. When I came up with my quote: I’m Possible, not impossible for the first week of my next art journaling course I was reminded of the steampunk ethos. Rather than focus on the impossibility of the things we can’t do, think of ways we can make them possible. I give the example of flight; for humans it is impossible - unaided. But with the help of machines we can fly and this is where my thinking about possibility and steampunk came together. Why not a mysterious flying machine steampunk art journal page? Exactly I thought, so that’s what I did. - [Easy Art Journaling with 3 Adaptable Art Supplies](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/easy-art-journaling/): Adaptable art supplies are The Holy Grail of easy art journaling. In this post I will show you how I’ve used 3 products that can be applied in different ways or with other art supplies to create different ‘looks’. The idea behind this page is to use techniques that are really easy to learn. This way you can start out with a few supplies and techniques and expand if and when you are ready. There should be no barriers to art journaling as it is such a beneficial and enjoyable activity. - [3 Excellent Reasons to Celebrate World Cocktail Day](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/illustration/celebrate-world-cocktail-day/): World cocktail day apparently has its origins on May 13th 1806 when the word ‘cocktail’ was coined. I couldn’t find out if it is a day that has been celebrated since then or if ‘World Cocktail Day’ itself is a newer institution. The lack of clarity notwithstanding, it cannot be denied that cocktails practically have their own religion as popular as they are. - [3 Gorgeous Fluorescent Colours You Need to Use in Your Next Painting](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/3-gorgeous-fluorescent-colours/): Fluorescent colours are such fun but the paint normally fades in prolonged exposure to sunlight so an art journal is a great place to play with them as the pages are protected. Choosing Fluorescent Colours in Paints You can get fluorescent colours in: pigment paint - claim to be lightfast too which means they should not fade from exposure to light. pen - a whole page of different types of pens. screen printing ink acrylic ink - I find these to be very thin. format. I have added some links to the list above to products that you might want to check out. In pigment format they can be added to any binder you choose or resin, soaps, candles. I’ve only tried the pigments with resin and they do work nicely. - [3 Inspiring National Tea Day Celebratory Art Ideas](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/3-national-tea-day-art-ideas/): National tea day has been celebrated on 21st April since 2016. I decided to make an art journal page for national tea day 2022 so started off by visiting the website for national tea day in UK. What is National Tea Day About? Us Brits love our tea don’t we? I know I do and not just your standard cuppa. Herbal teas are a firm favourite and have health benefits that we have been taking advantage of for centuries. So National tea day aims to celebrate this tradition by dedicating a day to it each year. The organisation behind the celebration organises on and offline events to honour the humble cuppa. Of course tea drinking in the UK isn’t just about the brew, it has a whole raft of associated culture. I’m thinking of tea and biscuits to ‘dunk’ in it, or high tea with scones and cakes or even the notorious builder’s brew - strong and in a big mug. There’s also tea parties and teddy bear’s picnics where the teapot rules supreme. All this is a lot of fuel for art journaling inspiration and so I came up with 3 themes for national tea day art journal pages to share with you. - [Awesome Art Journal Personalised Gift Card Design](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journal-personalised-gift-card-design/): To create a personalised gift card design first you have to get to know what the recipient likes or would appreciate and it helps to have a reason to send the card…. Customized gift cards are very popular online as they take card designs and make them personal to the receiver.  It helps you feel like you're giving something you had a hand in making.  Going one step further there’s nothing better than giving a handmade gift and here art journaling excels because it provides the opportunity to be really creative knowing you will bring a smile to someone’s face. - [St David’s Day 1st March Card Design](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/st-davids-day-1st-march-card-design/): St David, of course, is the patron St of Wales and there are, in our culture, several interesting tales about him. I spent my young years in Bronant in mid Wales going to a County Primary school and learning to speak Welsh. St David’s day was a special day for us when we got to dress in traditional Welsh costume and do creative activities like singing and painting and reciting. Of course, a lot of those paintings were of daffodils which I still love to paint. - [Love Your Pet Day February 20 2022](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/illustration/love-your-pet-day-february-20-2022/): Pets are great for our mental health. They can make each day brighter, can be comfort during sad times, can add to the hilarity of good times, are great on camera and they tell no lies. Generally they are fluff balls of love so who wouldn’t want to love their pet? Sadly there are too many instances of pets not being treated well. Today is national Love Your Pet day to help us celebrate the joy they bring but also to serve as a reminder to take good care of them. - [Creativity Requires Courage](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/creativity-requires-courage/): This journal page was inspired by the quote Creativity requires the Courage to let go of Certainty I think this is never more evident than in the layering process in art so I made this page with layers, letting go of each by adding the next. It's so easy to get attached to a layer that's been added, especially when it's full of colour and serendipitous texture. - [Unplug and Recover Now Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/unplugged-art-journal-page/): I love this quote; to me it means disconnect from everything and rest and then you will be able to start again refreshed. I often tell my students that an art journal is a great place to try out ideas and even get new ones. That was the case with this page. Having made the page I thought it would work better as a gif which could show the before and after of being unplugged. My concept of a cat being plugged in by its tail could probably use some work but it was a fun idea so I went with it. - [Year of the Water Tiger 2022 Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/year-of-the-water-tiger-2022-art-journal-page/): Today is the 1st Feb 2022 and as such it is the start of the Chinese New Year, also new Lunar year. This year is the year of the tiger and more specifically the year of the water tiger. This only occurs every 60 years and the last year of the water tiger was in 1962. Water is one of the elements along with metal, wood, fire and earth. There is further information on what the year of the tiger means in Chinese culture, online. - [Burns Night Spot Illustrations](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/illustration/burns-night-spot-illustrations/): Happy Burns Night to all you Scottish men and women. I have written a brief article below to include some spot illustrations having just done Tom Froese’s brilliant Sweet Spots course on Skillshare. - [Progress not Perfection Art Journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/blog-news/progress-not-perfection-art-journal-page/): This post is about week 1 of my upcoming course "Art Journal Quotes" which will take place in Flint library, North Wales. The page is made around the quote: "Progress not Perfection". I think this is an important thing to keep in mind especially for people recovering from mental illness or dealing with it on a regular basis. It is also very relevant to artists who can often feel their work isn't good enough. - [Trying Out New Styles – Manga Love](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/trying-out-new-styles-manga-love/): Sometimes it happens ... you can run out of enthusiasm for your usual way of creating. Then it's time to shake things up. Why not try a different style? I am doing this currently with a book I have by *** on Manga and have reimagined some of his art, picking up some Manga tips in the process. - [3 Funky Easter Card Designs – Bunnies Card Ideas](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/easter-card-designs-easter-bunny-card/): Easter is fast approaching and thoughts are turning to chocolate ...... and the Easter bunnies on this year's card designs are turning to eggs, chocolate or hatching ones.Easter is a great time of year to be art journaling with plenty of inspiration for characters and colour. There’s bunnies, lambs, chicks of all sorts of birds and not to mention all the weird and wonderful ways you could combine them to create unique/unusual characters on your journal pages. What about an Easter dinosaur? Of course children’s characters are great in pastel Easter colours and dinosaurs are great children’s characters. Do you have a child who would enjoy creating an Easter dinosaur with you? - [It’s Too Expensive!](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-paintings/its-too-expensive/): Sometimes it really IS too expensive ... but there are also other times when something's value is higher even than its price point. Let me try to explain my thinking .... Value and Cost are not Always Equal A great example is Amazon Prime shopping. Although I know the prices are inflated I find the reduced stress of not having to navigate busy shops to maybe find what I’m looking for is often worth it. Sometimes cost might be far too high for the value you might place on an item for example, for me designer shoes cost the earth but do not have as much value as arch supports. Another example is the cost of a good holiday. If it rejuvenates you and helps you cope better with your day to day then its value is probably higher than its cost to you. Travel insurance is another good case in point. - [Why You Should Buy Art …](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-paintings/why-you-should-buy-art/): Years ago I lived in Africa with my family for a few years. My dad loved the country and the wildlife with a special interest in the birds, having always been a keen birdwatcher. As a result we spent a fait amount of time visiting nature reserves. A peculiar feature of business there was that artists would sell their crafts and art at the side of the road. This is how my dad acquired a few nice pieces depicting birds and the landscape that still remind him of the things he loved about the area to this day. - [Turning Your Art Journal Pages into Xmas Cards](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/turning-your-art-journal-pages-into-xmas-cards/): Art journaling is a great way to explore your creativity largely because it can be very private: you make a page and then close your journal and no one else can judge you worthy or unworthy. But what if you want to share your art? I know I enjoy showing friends and family my art journal pages which is what lead me here - sharing with the world. Of course you don’t have to go that far! - [The Colours Won’t Work](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-paintings/the-colours-wont-work/): Just 'picture' this ... you see a painting/print that you just love BUT it is in bright oranges, reds and yellows. You think and think about where you could hang it but all your rooms are in blues and greens. You decide you couldn't live with something stamding out so much on your wall but it is with a wistful sigh that you leave the painting on the shelf. Of course you might decide to buy it on a card or product if that option is available but it might not be. - [Art Journaling Fun Palaces Session](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-fun-palaces-session/): This year, 2020, I will be doing my first livestream, in conjunction with Fun Palaces, on Sunday 4th October on this page. The session will give some tips for art journaling without buying art specific supplies. This is to show how it doesn’t need to be an expensive hobby or take up a lot of space in the house. - [Art on Products](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-on-products/): I'm a big fan of functional items and must confess never been much of a one for ornaments so putting art on useful products makes great sense to me. I have spent some time and effort doing it myself at home (see below) but there is a limit to what I can do myself. Magnetic Wildflower Bookmarklets Geraniums Wildflower Cushions Stickers - [The Mighty Salmon](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/nature/the-mighty-salmon/): This week I am inspired by the Atlantic Salmon that swims up rivers in Scotland at this time of year (October - November) to spawn. How they navigate waterfalls involves a lot of failing and trying again and they must do this repeatedly before reaching their breeding grounds. No wonder they are so exhausted after spawning that the majority die! - [What to do when it all Goes Wrong – Art Journal Mess Ups](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/what-to-do-when-it-all-goes-wrong-art-journal-mess-ups/): This week I’m looking at a common dilemma and one that can actually stop people from trying art at all. - [Journaling in Your Art Journal](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/journaling-in-your-art-journal/): You can add even more layers of meaning by journaling in your art journal. - [Getting to Know Acrylics](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/getting-to-know-acrylics/): What are acrylic paints? They are a water based media that dries permanent with a plasticky finish. They are made from pigment in an acrylic polymer emulsion. Acrylics come in different consistencies: High viscosity or heavy body: these guys really give a textural finish, I love them. Normal, medium viscosity: great for flat painting. Low viscosity or fluid acrylics: lovely for dripping or using in an airbrush. Acrylic inks: enjoy for graphic work, permanent backgrounds, writing. - [Borders to Frame Your Art journal Page](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/borders-to-frame-your-art-journal-page/): To frame or not to frame, that is the question .... A border around the page can help frame it, giving a finished appearance. I don’t always add borders but sometimes they are just what is needed to finish a page. I have put a different type of border on each of the remaining pages in my series (4) to suggest some options. You may be a fan of one type and just stick to that or experiment with variations of these or make up your own. I would love to see them. Here’s a bit about why I chose the borders I did for each page - obviously this is just what appealed to me at the time as well as being examples of different type of borders. - [4 Powerful Focal Images to Add to Your Art Journal Pages](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/adding-focal-imagery-to-your-art-journal-pages/): So, following on from last week's second layer I am adding focal images. By no means do I stick to just 2 layers .... it all depends on how the page develops ... but for this series of videos I thought it would be easier to follow. I decided not to work on my inky butterfly background and do something else with that in future. That's how it often is with art journaling; you can start a page with great intentions but things don't work out so you have to have a rethink. - [Protecting Artwork, 5 Important Things to Consider](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/protecting-artwork/): Typically art isn’t cheap to buy and may also have deep emotional significance so it makes sense to want to protect it. From a sellers point of view you want to do all you can to ensure your buyer has the best rewards from their purchase possible. So what does artwork need protecting from? I think this really depends on the environment where it will be displayed and could include: being knocked or bumped fingerprints smoke dust uv light. - [Adding Layers in 5 Fun Ways in an Art Journal](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/adding-layers-in-an-art-journal/): Adding layers is a great way to build up depth and interest on a page in your art journal. - [5 Background Techniques to Play with](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/5-background-techniques-to-play-with/): Background techniques are a great way to start an art journal page. On my art journaling courses people often tell me that they don't know where to start. The blank page can be intimidating ... there is all this expectation that it heaps on you to create something worthy. Having great expectations for the outcome is no way to get the most out of art journaling. I'm not suggesting you should have no consideration of the end result just that getting immersed in the process will be more rewarding. Creating a crazy background is a fab way to get immersed in the process. You can put aside thoughts about the finished page and just use a background techniques to break into the blank page. This approach is so liberating because your background might consist of many layers, created as your intentions changed while you painted. - [From Inspiration to Celebration](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/from-inspiration-to-celebration/): Today I want to share some of my creative process, not just the part where I actually make something but the background to it. All the ideas we get come from somewhere: the environment, plants, animals, political issues, internal landscape, hopes and dreams. For some time I have been particularly inspired by plants, especially flowers - I adore the colour and delicate form. I think I love butterflies for the same reason. - [1 Marvellous Mixed Media Strategy – Mixing Old and New Media](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/mixing-old-media-and-new-media/): Mixing old and new media is a great mixed media strategy for getting unusual results. In this post I combine digital printing technology with mixed traditional media. - [Using Stickers in my Art Journal](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/using-stickers-in-my-art-journal/): Today I want to share an art journal page with you that I have made with stickers I created from a painting - Gracious Gladioli. - [The Cushion That Didn’t Fit In](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/the-cushion-that-didnt-fit-in/): Porsha counted to 10 as she felt the packaging around her being gently opened. Two ladies stood there smiling and admiring her and she thought "this is a happy place, I'm going to be loved". She was placed on a table and the two ladies went out of the room, drinks in their hands chatting merrily. - [Embossing Powder Ideas and how I Create Art Journal Pages](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/nature/embossing-powder-ideas-and-how-i-create-art-journal-pages/): Here follows some embossing powder ideas I came up with in my art journal. - [The Unifying Effect of Repetition](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/the-unifying-effect-of-repetition/): In art and design repeating elements are used to unify an image, amongst other things. Artists will often repeat a colour in different areas of a canvas to bring the background and subject together. Motifs are often repeated and if different sizes are used some sort of rhythm can be established as well as unifying. abstract painting St John’s Wort inspired I often use repetition in my art in all the layers. In the final layer it is obvious as I repeat a series of pixel shapes and dashes in different parts of the canvas, for example in the image to the right (click to get a full sized view). - [Artists Who Use Mixed Media](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/artists-who-use-mixed-media/): We can learn a great deal by studying the work of other artists whether we just want to enliven our own personal art or produce art professionally. I really enjoy the work of Gustav Klimt as he used gold leaf, platinum and silver with his oil paints to produce very stylised work. And I have experimented with metal leaf and also foils in my own work. I mentioned some of the earlier mixed media artists in this blog post - [My Favourite and Fun Mixed Media Techniques](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-favourite-and-fun-mixed-media-techniques/): There is something decidedly rebellious about 'mixing media' ... No longer hampered by the limitations of one media you are free to create almost unlimited effects. Do you just want a whisper of an image or is something more substantial, perhaps 3d, required. And provided any 3rd dimension is not too big an art journal is a great place to experiment before taking your ideas to canvas. - [The Joy of Flowers – Flowers Improve Mental Health](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/illustration/the-joy-of-flowers-flowers-improve-mental-health/): This is just a short and simple animation to show how flowers can effect mood. The appearance of the first flowers in Spring has long been celebrated within our culture, in the U.K. Daffodils being a prime example in Wales and in Japan, the cherry blossom. But in my animation I have used simple shapes to represent the flowers, suggesting that even just the idea of flowers can lift the spirits. And images of flowers can be found everywhere, from graffiti to home decor to fabric to jewellery to art, showing how important they are to our psyche. - [Art Journaling in Self Isolation – Take THAT, Coronavirus!](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-in-self-isolation-take-that-coronavirus/): Art journaling is a great way to bring a visual outcome to contemplation. Having sat in the fresh air for sometime - 5 minutes to several hours - you will have wandered to many places in your thoughts. Then return home to a cup of tea and a creative space with your art journal and record where you went. You might choose to focus on something difficult that cropped up in your thoughts to help you resolve it further and maybe find some positive way to deal with or repackage it. Or maybe you had joyous thoughts and you want to celebrate these on a page. - [Art Journaling as a Creative Process](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-as-a-creative-process/): To me, art journaling is a creative process in a few different ways. - [Difference Between Mixed Media Art and Collage – Is Collage Mixed Media?](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/difference-between-mixed-media-art-and-collage-is-collage-mixed-media/): In one way the difference is very simple: collage is a specific technique that can be used on its own or within a mixed media piece. So a mixed media piece might combine collage with acrylic/ink/charcoal. A collage would become a mixed media piece when other media were added. From the Cambridge English dictionary: - [Mother’s Day Card Design Ideas to Brighten Up Her Day](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/craft/cards/mothers-day-card-design-ideas-to-brighten-up-her-day/): A couple of years ago I wrote this post about Mother's Day in the U.K. and U.S. This year I've painted some Mother's Day card designs in my expressive, colourful style. They are based on UK animals and done in a whimsical style. I hope they say "I love you mom"! They are sure to put a smile on her face. - [The Effects of Colour on Mood](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/the-effects-of-colour-on-mood/): Psychotherapists are, according to this article about colour, sceptical about using it to influence mood. And there is little scientific research to encourage them. However, colour has been very important to many cultures and, importantly, colours have different significance across cultures. So how is colour useful to us …? In my opinion, colour choice is very personal – from a very young age children will have their ‘favourite’ colour. For some children it will change regularly but for others, like me, it stays the same. I was very drawn to red as a child and I can’t remember there being any red in our decor at home. Maybe it was this scarcity that made me think ‘Wow!’ when I saw it …? I - [Happy Process – What is Layering in Art?](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/my-process-what-is-layering-in-art/): In art layering means letting one application of paint dry before adding another. In some painting the layers are translucent, typically with watercolours but oils and acrylics can both be translucent, and so the layers beneath affect the colour of the outcome. In other painting opaque layers are used to obscure parts of the previous layers, for example when painting animal fur a dark layer may go down first followed by gradually lighter areas. In my painting I use translucent and opaque paints in my layering. In contrast some art is created in a single layer such as when working graphically. Think of colouring pages where areas of the painting are filled in, in one go. - [My Mixed Media Art Journal Love](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/my-mixed-media-art-journal-love/): I love playing with mixed media in my art journal and this week I thought I would combine the theme of of love with some mixed media art journaling. But first a short story about love (sadly I missed Valentine's day) - [Challenges of Daily Art Journaling: Challenge Yourself](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/challenges-of-daily-art-journaling-challenge-yourself/): You might ask yourself - [Joyful Art Journaling](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/joyful-art-journaling/): Quite a few of my blogs about art journaling in January were a little on the gloomy side so I wanted to talk about the joy of art journaling. - [Art Journaling – Gelli Printing](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-gelli-printing/): I love patterned papers - all those delightful, colourful designs. That is where I started with collage before including book pages/newsprint/music sheets/serviettes. And then I discovered something new to collage with in my art journaling - gelli printing. I have since made several art journal pages by collaging with gelli prints ... - [Getting to Know the Path](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/getting-to-know-the-path/): My journey to the art I now make started with walks along the portion of the Wales Coastal Path near where I live. When I was unwell I used to walk there with my mother who is very knowledgeable about plants, being a scientist by degree. She would help me identify the many little flowering plants we found there and the birds that came and went. I loved the shapes and colours and soon started photographing them as reference for sketches and paintings I then made at home. - [Art Journaling with Stencils](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-with-stencils/): Stencils can add a great deal to the creative experience of art journaling. With stencils you can add pattern texture, raised areas, interesting detail to layers, featured images. There are a few techniques you can use with your stencils which you can either buy or make yourself. - [Get Started Art Journaling for Non-artists](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/get-started-art-journaling-for-non-artists/): Can a non-builder use a hammer/spanner/screwdriver? Absolutely! And there is no difference for art journaling. Many artists keep a sketchbook to collect ideas but you can keep an art journal as a non-artist to play with paint. You never have to make a 'finished' piece in your journal if you don't want to and you can revisit pages on different days and add things or cover them up. Think of an art journal as an edited document - it's somewhere you can make changes. But you might want to create complete pages in one go, that is up to you. - [Essential Art Journaling Background Techniques to Accomplish Great Spreads](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-background-techniques/): I tend to divide art journaling background techniques into 2 categories: media that stays put and media that needs fixing. - [Art Journaling for Grief](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-for-grief/): Grief is something we all experience in differing degrees. It's all about losing someone/something/somewhere that is important to us and it is so individual. And that is why art journaling for grief can help - because we can express our very own perspective of it. Our art journals are safe spaces where we can project our feelings and no one can judge us (especially if we don't share them). In an art journal our most inner feelings are valid so whatever we are grieving for is given its rightful acceptance. - [Art Journaling by Email FREE Course](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/art-journaling-by-email-free-course/): Art journaling has been such an adventure and healing process for me that I really want to encourage people to try it. And not just try it, I want to help you get a lot out of it. When I first started art journaling there was little about it online - content which I eagerly consumed. A lot of it was about techniques and supplies and I struggled to find inspiration for my own pages. I began interpreting poems and quotes and found this really helped me construct pages that ... made sense ... to Me. - [Ivy Bees Art Journal Devastating Discovery – a Warning](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/nature/ivy-bees-art-journal-page/): This journal page of ivy bees art was inspired by a surprising discovery that was not very positive but shows how art journaling can support learning. - [Making of a Clematis Abstract – my process.](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/making-of-a-clematis-abstract-my-process/): I was really excited to see my clematis bloom this year as it was its first. Great big duo colour double blooms .... I had to capture it in paint - as well as an illustration. - [Stag Beetles in June](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/nature/stag-beetles-in-june/): Stag beetles can be seen in the South of England between May and August. Typically they emerge in June from their underground homes where they lived for 6 years as larvae munching on rotting wood. The males stag like mouth parts are much bigger than the females and are used for fighting off rival males. They are endangered in this country and it is thought to be because of a lack of available wood and the destruction of wood containing larvae. - [Art Therapy or Art as Therapy?](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-therapy-or-art-as-therapy/): In this post I take 'art' to mean the creation of visual representations either digitally or with traditional media. I see it, in this context, as distinct from craft based activities such as sculpture, knitting, ceramics (although art can clearly involve any of these processes). I am not referring to fine art or a need for a cultural context. - [Urban Sketching at Flint Castle](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/urban-sketching-at-flint-castle/): Flint Castle is situated on the Dee estuary. The site was chosen by Edward 1st, during his war on the Welsh, as it was close to sea routes for trade. He had workers from around England forcibly drafted in to populate the new 'town' of Flint in order to build the castle. It was the first in his Iron Ring of castles. - [5 Inpiring Bloggers Who Art Journal](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/5-inpiring-bloggers-who-art-journal/): Sometimes I hit a slump with my art journaling. I might feel like I've been using the same techniques for ages or my subject matter has become boring. When this happens I like to hunt for inspiration from the art journals of others. This is when the internet is really my friend because it brings me many blogs of art journalers to search through. Here are some of the art journalers who have inspired me on my journey. - [Top 5 Art Journaling Prompts to Use and Reuse](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/top-5-art-journaling-prompts-to-use-and-reuse/): When I first started art journaling I was always looking for ideas to inspire my art journal page spreads. I used poems, inspirational quotes, a word of the day and public holidays. These alone can give a lot of variety but can take a bit of digging to find something that is meaningful on a personal level. - [My Top 10 Art Journaling Supplies](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/my-top-10-art-journaling-supplies/): Everyone has their favourite supplies for art journaling. It takes practice to find out what will give you the effects you like best. Here is a list of suggestions to help you get started. - [Floral Sticker Give Away](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/blog-news/floral-sticker-giveaway/): I recently reached 500 likes on my Facebook page so I'm really excited to have this sticker give away to celebrate the milestone. - [3 Ways Art Journaling Improves Mental Health](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/3-ways-art-journaling-improves-mental-health/): I don't like to dwell on the past - it's important that to avoid negative thought patterns. For me, doing somethinng positive is the best way to stay well. That is what has led me down the path to create a course on art journaling linked to mental wellbeing. Because of the improvements I have seen, I want to share this with others. - [3 Ways to Celebrate Primroses You’ll Love](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/3-ways-to-celebrate-primroses-youll-love/): I saw my first primrose yesterday, a sure sign of Spring. I love their delicate yellow flowers far more than the related garden primulas that can be bought. They have a number of medicinal properties that the Celts used them for, including treating arthritis, as a skin toner, as a sedative and for treating bladder infections. The flowers make a lovely herbal tea to drink in the evening. - [Celtic Hawthorn Mixed Media Spread](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/celtic-hawthorn-mixed-media-spread/): From the superstitions, the Celts would appear to have had a contradictory relationship with Hawthorn. On the one hand children were scolded for bringing it into the house for fear of causing a death while in other lore it was used to protect a house from witches. Witches were also believed to make their broomsticks from Hawthorn. Also it was thought to be unlucky to disturb Hawthorn bushes as these were sacred sites of the Faeries and the Faeries were not to be disturbed. Some of these contradictions may be explained by the existence of two different trees of the same name. One, which would of been scarce centuries ago and is more common now smells sweet and grows as a tree. The other, Woodland Hawthorn, smells of rotting flesh and would have been more common when these superstitions were popular. - [Raven & Periwinkle Art Journal Spread.](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/raven-periwinkle-art-journal-spread/): I was reading about Celtic lore for February, the month of the snowdrop. The petals of the snowdrop symbolised death to the Celts so this week I had a look at lore surrounding death. The Celts believed it was unlucky to disturb the periwinkles that they grew on graves and also that it was unlucky to kill a raven. The raven itself is associated with The Morrigan, a terrifying Irish Celtic Goddess. She also goes by the name Badhbh which means crow or raven. - [Celtic Goddess Brighide’s Birds – Oystercatcher](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/celtic-goddess-brighides-birds-oystercatcher/): There is a YouTube Video of this art journal spread here. - [Wonderful Wildflowers – Solo Exhibition in Oswestry](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/exhibitions/wonderful-wildflowers-solo-exhibition-in-oswestry/): I spent the six months since the Qube Open preparing for this solo exhibition in Oswestry at the Qube gallery. The gallery is a lovely space for artists to exhibit work. My last solo exhibition was in RSPB Conwy, also a lovely venue. Also on at Qube gallery during my solo exhibition is an exhibition downstairs of landscapes painted in a loose style which is worth a visit. - [Haring after the Plane Art Journal Spread](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/haring-after-the-plane-art-journal-spread/): Haring after the plane - youTube. For this art journal spread I was inspired by brown hares which were traditional Winter fare in the UK. There is some debate still over how native a species the brown hare is. Their boxing behaviour is explained now by the females rebuffing the males in Spring. However, it is unknown why groups of hares on airfields chase after planes regularly. - [Illustration1 Exercise List](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/oca/ilustration-1/illustration1-exercise-list/): There follows a list of links to all the exercises in the course. I have set each link to open in a new tab so that this page can remain open for easy access as I have other content on this website not related to the OCA course. - [Final Reflection](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/oca/ilustration-1/final-reflection/): I have thoroughly enjoyed this course and have developed good working processes to answer briefs and manage deadlines. I feel the feedback I have had from my tutor has helped me see things I had missed and increased my self-confidence in that it has also frequently echoed my own thoughts about each piece. For example, I had felt the menu card exercise result was appropriate and my tutor's feedback that the watercolour and pencil technique worked well for the brief reinforced this. Also I had been dissatisfied with my editorial illustraton brief and my tutor's comment that it was confusing motivated me to readdress the concept I was trying to visualise. - [The Mighty Oak – distress oxide background](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/the-mighty-oak-distress-oxide-background/): You can see the video of me making this spread here: YouTube - The Mighty Oak. - [4 Fun Xmas Cards Kids will Love to Adapt](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/christmas/4-fun-xmas-cards-kids-will-love-to-adapt/): Christmas arrives so suddenly and it is getting close now. So this year I decided to set aside time early to have fun making Christmas cards. I've included 5 designs here that use techniques you could adapt for children but adults will enjoy them just as much. - [Bracken for Bedding.](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/bracken-for-bedding/): Before we discovered the spores of bracken are carcinogenic we used it in many ways. It was used as fodder, packaging, soap, briquettes for fuel and bedding for livestock. Since I often see cattle in the fields along the coast I decided to make a journal spread inspired by the use of bracken as bedding for livestock. - [Stamp Making Tip](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/art/art-journalling/stamp-making-tip/): So for a while now I have been looking for a cheap and easy stamp making technique. Something that means I can create text stamps easily and small motifs for use in art journaling. I was really interested in stamps that stick to acrylic blocks. ## Pages - [Leading up to Xmas – Gratitude](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/art-journaling-leading-up-to-christmas/leading-up-to-xmas-gratitude/): Technical Excellence in Your Art Journal? I can even get carried away imagining what I would do for charity. It leaves me with an uplifted mood so I decided that it would make a great art journal page; one that can be created differently many times. And it's not just me being sentimental, there is science behind the idea that thinking kind thoughts can have a positive effect on the brain. So go crazy with this spread .... - [Session 2: Random Acts of Kindness](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/playing-with-paint/acts-of-kindness/): Random acts of kindness are just what they sound like: small things you can choose to do, completely voluntarily, for someone else, most often a complete stranger. There is no need to expect gratitude and no debt incurred. It is a deed done purely for its own sake and with the hope of brightening someone's day. It is liberating to do something for someone else without expectation of reciprocation and can help to improve your state of mind and mental health. Doing something kind has been linked to release of serotonin and endorphins, both of which make you feel better. - [Session 1: A Safe Space](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/playing-with-paint/session-1-a-safe-space/): A Safe Place - Acrylic and ink with collage.I have a book about healing and in it there is a meditation called healing room. During the meditation you build a sanctuary where you can go to mend all ills. For me it was a very visual experience and I felt it would work well as an art journal page. As you are free to re-imagine this room anytime, this session could be revisited a number of times. - [Playing With Paint](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/playing-with-paint/): This 4 session journaling course features acrylic paint play in an art journal. To me shock is an instant reaction that doesn't last very long. It maybe followed by joy or fear. - [A Sad Fish](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/our-pets-and-emotions/a-sad-fish/): Sometimes when we are sad there are things that can cheer us up, e.g. my son has always been able to make me laugh even when I'm very sad. In your page about sadness you may want to focus on the things that can cheer you up rather than the things that make you sad. That said, focusing on the sadness can be cathartic and is sometimes necessary to deal with grief. It all depends on how you process emotion and where you are emotionally. Personally, and especially because of the effects of depression, I find it most helpful to try to focus on positive things. - [A Contented Koala](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/our-pets-and-emotions/a-contented-koala/): Contentment will mean different things to different people. To some it may imply having everything they want and need while to others it may mean some sort of acceptance of what they have in life. Either way you can think about who/what makes you feel contented and make your page a homage to that. - [A Frightened Bunny](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/our-pets-and-emotions/a-frightened-bunny/):   - [Our Pets and Emotions](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/our-pets-and-emotions/): https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/introduction-converted.mp4 - [Art Journaling – Leading Up To Christmas](https://24steps-art-and-design.co.uk/courses/art-journaling-leading-up-to-christmas/): Technical Excellence in Your Art Journal?
