Little Egrets have become established along the Dee section of Wales coast in recent years. Their huge yellow feet are a dead giveaway. I often used to startle one when walking along the coast and watch as it struggles into the air, tucking its neck and legs under it.
I can’t walk much anymore because of joint problems and this makes this egret art more valuable, bringing back happy memories.
My process for this piece was to start the canvas with expressive strokes of acrylic paint and add in drips of fluid acrylic. Over this I sprayed through stencils and lace and then used a mask to protect the area for the bird whilst adding translucent layers of acrylic in an impasto way that gives the piece a lot of textural interest. I used matt acrylic to prepare the canvas for the Inktense pencil work which I layered to build up the painting of this original egret art.
