St Johns Wort is a fairly well known healing herb that can be taken to alleviate depression. The cheery yellows in the first layers of this painting reminded me of the herb that is identifiable by the perforations in its leaves. The sharp contrasts between dark and light speak to the nature of the struggle with depression.

St John’s Wort Art Associated Folklore

St. John’s Wort, a herbaceous plant with bright yellow flowers, has a rich folklore dating back centuries. In European tradition, the plant was associated with St. John the Baptist, hence its name, and it was believed to bloom around the time of his feast day in late June. The herb was thought to possess protective qualities against evil spirits and witches, leading to its use in various rituals and charms. Additionally, St. John’s Wort was believed to have healing properties, particularly for ailments like depression and anxiety. Its folklore is deeply intertwined with cultural practices, where people would hang bundles of the herb over doorways to ward off negativity or include it in midsummer celebrations. While St. John’s Wort is recognised for its medicinal benefits, its folklore continues to add a layer of mystique to its cultural significance.
