St Johns Wort is a fairly well known healing herb that can be taken to alleviate depression. The cheery yellows in the first layers of this painting reminded me of the herb that is identifiable by the perforations in its leaves. The sharp contrasts between dark and light speak to the nature of the struggle with depression.

St John’s Wort Art Associated Folklore

St. John’s Wort, a herbaceous plant with bright yellow flowers, has a rich folklore dating back centuries.
