This sketch was in response to feedback from an assignment to study people more. My reference photo is from a book called Virtual Pose. Working from a reference photo allows for more relaxed sketching than from life although it is not a substitute.
I worked on A4 velour pastel paper with pastels. My aim was to study general body shape rather than produce a detailed drawing as my reference is quite small. This was my first attempt on velour paper and I really enjoyed it but found it difficult to blend.
I started by filling in the negative space to give a space for the figures then blocked in the general dark and light areas. I added mid-tones towards the end then defined some edges using pastel pencils.
